Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is an herbaceous perennial plant in the mint family Lamiaceae. It is native to Europe and Asia but has been naturalized in many other regions. The plant grows to be 1-3 feet tall. The active compound that attracts cats is nepetalactone, a volatile iridoid found in the plant's leaves, stems, and seed cases. When cats smell or ingest this organic compound, it triggers a temporary euphoric response by binding to receptors in their nasal cavity.
