Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) is a perennial, aromatics herb that is a natural hybrid of spearmint and watermint. It is native to Europe and the Middle East but is now cultivated all over the world. The plant has square, reddish- purple stems that can grow up to two feet tall. The leaves are dark green, oblong- shaped, and have a slightly wrinkled texture. When crushed, they release that iconic peppermint aroma- cool and minty! In the summer, peppermint produces small, pink or lavender colored flowers. These blooms attract all sorts of pollinators like bees and butterflies. The high concentration of menthol in peppermint makes the herb useful for all sorts of applications, from flavoring foods and drinks to soothing upset stomachs.
